IN BRIEF : Reds Get Boston Minors Pitcher

January 12, 1989| From Times staff and wire service reports

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds said today they have acquired right-handed pitcher Luis Vasquez from the Boston Red Sox to complete a five-player trade made in December.

The acquisition of Vasquez, 21, from Boston's farm system completes the Dec. 13 trade that sent first baseman-outfielder Todd Benzinger and right-handed pitcher Jeff Sellers to Cincinnati for first baseman Nick Esasky and left-handed relief pitcher Rob Murphy. The Reds also announced that veteran first baseman-outfielder Ken Griffey, 38, will report to Cincinnati's spring training camp in Plant City, Fla., as a non-roster player. Griffey, who played for Cincinnati in the mid-1970s, returned to the Reds by signing last Aug. 2 as a free agent after the Atlanta Braves released him July 28.

Vasquez split the 1988 season between Boston's Class AA New Britain farm team and the Class AAA Pawtucket team.
