Huntington Park : Hearing Slated on Building Reinforcement Law

January 19, 1989

The Huntington Park City Council has scheduled a hearing Feb. 6 on a proposed ordinance that would eventually require unreinforced masonry buildings to be strengthened, vacated or demolished to reduce injuries and damage during an earthquake.

State law requires the city to identify all such buildings and notify the owners by Jan. 1, 1990. If the ordinance passes, owners would have to strengthen, vacate or demolish affected buildings within 270 days of being notified by the city, said Sam Miller, the city's director of building and safety.

Property owners would pay the cost of making their buildings safe.
