School Burrows Underground to Save Space, Dodge Airplanes

February 05, 1989

An $8.5-million subterranean elementary school for the Lennox School District, near Los Angeles International Airport, will replace the former Larch Elementary School.

Funded by Caltrans, the new 55,000-square-foot elementary school on a 9.3-acre site, is scheduled to open in December. The site will require less land than other schools its size since parking facilities will be on the roof of the below-grade building that will house 1,000 children.

School district concerns regarding limited land, security and noise from arriving flights at the airport were issues addressed by the architectural firm of Ralph Allen & Partners, Santa Ana.
