The city of Santa Monica is preparing to go to court to defend a $280-million office park/movie studio complex proposed by Reliance Development Group on land at the east end of the Santa Monica Airport.
Homeowners have challenged the project, claiming that land at the airport was designated as a public park 60 years ago and can't be used for anything else unless voters approve. An attorney hired by the city says voter approval isn't necessary.
City planners have recommended that the project be scaled back by 20%. Councilman Herb Katz, agreed with several other council members that the project should be reduced in size, but he rejects not developing the land because it would be difficult to maintain and would attract gang violence.
