Long Beach : Agency Allocates $40,000 to Support Street Festivals

March 16, 1989

The Long Beach Redevelopment Agency board has approved spending $40,000 in matching funds to promote a downtown Carnaval '89 and the International City Festival.

The board approved giving $20,000 to the Downtown Long Beach Associates, an association of downtown businesses, to publicize the second Carnaval. The Mardi Gras-type event attracted 50,000 people to the streets of downtown Long Beach last year, but was considered a financial failure. This year, the associates hope to receive $192,000 in funds from sales and sponsorships in addition to the redevelopment funds to stage the May 29 event.

The other $20,000 will be given to the Public Corp. for the Arts for the International City Festival, scheduled June 20 through July 2 on the Promenade and the Terrace Plaza. It marks the fourth year of the event.
