March 23, 1989| From Times wire services

NEW YORK — Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. said today that its manufacturing plant in Smyrna, Tenn., was operating at about 83% of capacity and was expected to double output by the early 1990s.

The Smyrna plant now delivers 220,000 vehicles a year, versus capacity of 265,000 vehicles, Nissan Chief Financial Officer Atsushi Muramatsu told an automotive conference.

Nissan hopes to produce 40,000 vehicles a month, or 480,000 units a year, by the early 1990s, Muramatsu said. The company hopes ultimately to achieve 75% local content in vehicles made in Smyrna, a Nissan executive added.
