CHARLESTON, W. Va. — State Treasurer A. James Manchin faced impeachment proceedings Wednesday for losing $279 million in state funds through bad investments.
The state House of Delegates voted 65 to 34 to approve 17 articles of impeachment against Manchin, 61, whom Delegate Stephen Bird called "the most popular man in West Virginia."
The vote sends the case to the state Senate. Senate President Larry Tucker said a trial on the treasurer's removal probably would be held in late May.
Manchin testified during 10 days of hearings that he knew little about investments. He said he was betrayed by subordinates he hired to run the consolidated investment fund that lost the $279 million.
