Discounts in Alabama

April 16, 1989|JACK ADLER

If Alabama is on your itinerary this year, look into the state's yearlong Alabama Reunion program.

Booklets with more than 200 discount coupons, covering accommodations, sightseeing attractions, special events, state parks, museums, restaurants and stores, are available through the state Bureau of Tourism and Travel.

Most of the coupons are for hotels and motels and are valid all year, though there may be some blackout periods. There are even coupons for various services, including baby-sitting.

Among the sightseeing attractions are the Alabama Space & Rocket Center, Huntsville; the battleship U.S.S. Alabama in the harbor at Mobile, the Alabama Shakespeare Theater and the White House of the Confederacy, Montgomery; the International Motor Sports Hall of Fame in Talladega, and Vulcan Park in Birmingham. Another well-known attraction is Ivy Green, the birthplace of Helen Keller in Tuscumbia.

Many Areas Covered

Other areas covered by the coupon booklet are Tuscaloosa, Anniston and Boaz.

Among coming special events is a celebration in Huntsville July 15-24 commemorating the 20th anniversary of man's walk on the moon.

For a copy of the coupon booklet and other literature on the reunion program, contact the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel, 532 S. Perry St., Montgomery, Ala. 36104, toll-free (800) 252-2262.

Meanwhile, Florida is offering the "Florida Traveler Discount Guide."

This free booklet, updated every 60 days, offers discount coupons for motels, restaurants, sightseeing attractions, shopping mall/factory outlets and campgrounds.

Most of the coupons are for accommodations around such popular areas as Daytona Beach, Pensacola, Tampa, St. Petersburg, St. Augustine, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando. Among the attractions offering discounts in the most recent issue were Sea World and Cypress Gardens.

Useful maps and mileage charts, plus exit-by-exit information covering four major highways, are also provided in the 64-page publication.

Complimentary copies are available at tourist information centers. You can also obtain a copy by sending $2 to Florida Travel Discount Guide, 618 S. Main St., Gainesville, Fla. 32601, (904) 371-3948.
