About 17,000 grocery workers in Northern and Central California overwhelmingly ratified a 3-year contract with major supermarket chains, union officials announced. The five locals of the United Food & Commercial Workers union averaged 82.3% approval, said spokesman Phil Tucker. Details of the pact have not yet been released, pending a second ratification vote by 20,000 grocery workers in the Bay Area.
