A police chief said in Sheffield, England, that he ordered a stadium gate to be opened to prevent soccer fans outside from being crushed. However, 95 people were killed in the ensuing surge of the crowd.
Superintendent Roger Marshall told an investigating panel he was told by a senior officer that lives were in danger because of the mass of people pressing against a gate at the Hillsborough Stadium before a game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on April 15.
