June 15, 1989|From Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The worst thunderstorm in the local power company's records tore through the Washington area Wednesday, felling hundreds of trees and blacking out thousands of homes.

One motorist was reported killed.

More than 170,000 Washington, Maryland and Virginia customers lost power, utility companies said.

"This is the worst storm in terms of the number of customers affected and damage to (Potomac Electric Power Co.'s) electric distribution system in the 93-year history of the company," utility spokesman Kevin Case said.
