The recently created Jaime Escalante Educational Fund raised $37,000 for college scholarships at a gala dinner at the Century Plaza in April, according to Jo-ana D'Balcazar, the fund's spokeswoman.
She said that 50% of the scholarship funds will be given to Bolivian students, both in this country and in the South American country, in recognition of Escalante. He is the acclaimed calculus teacher at Garfield High School who was born in Bolivia. The other 50% of funds will be awarded to other Latino students in Southern California.
