Hours Left for Execution, High Court Grants a Stay

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The U.S. Supreme Court issued an indefinite stay of execution Thursday for Ronald Woomer, hours before he was scheduled to die in the electric chair for murdering a convenience store clerk in 1979. The court released no vote and made no other comment in its order.
