WORLD : Gear Fails, Plane Crushes Engineer

SUKKUR, Pakistan — An engineer inspecting a Pakistan International Airlines plane after an emergency landing was crushed to death when the nose gear collapsed, officials said today.

The twin-engine Fokker 27 had landed safely on a flight from Bahawalpur on Thursday with about 30 passengers and crew after the pilot alerted Sukkur airport that instruments showed his nose gear would not lock. Ground engineer Akbar Kasim Ali was sent to inspect the nose wheel bay and was working on it when the gear collapsed, bringing the plane down on him, airport authorities said. He died today of his injuries, they said.
