List of Candidates for Baseball Post at Royal Pared to 2

June 16, 1989|MIKE HISERMAN | Times Staff Writer

The number of candidates for the position of baseball coach at Royal High has been trimmed to two and an announcement from Principal Dave Jackson is expected as soon as today.

Al Tarazon of Channel Islands High and Dan May of Culver City High are still being considered as the replacement for Mike McCurdy, who resigned in May after four years as Royal coach.

Tarazon, a graduate of Santa Clara High in Oxnard, has been junior varsity baseball coach at Channel Islands for three seasons. He also is the defensive backs coach for the Raider football team.

May has been assistant varsity baseball coach at Culver City the past three seasons. Before that he was coach of the freshman team. Like Tarazon, May has a background in football. He has coached Culver City's varsity defensive line the past two seasons after working with lower-level teams the previous five seasons. In addition to guiding the varsity baseball team, Royal's new coach will be a football assistant.

Terry Dobbins, Royal's athletic director, said that Jackson will interview both remaining candidates a second time today before offering the job. Dobbins declined to confirm that Tarazon and May were the final candidates, but The Times confirmed their status through other sources.

The field of applicants numbered seven early in the week, but five of the coaches, including former Cal State Northridge Coach Terry Craven, have either withdrawn or been told they are no longer under consideration.
