Greedy Silkworms Fail to Spin Goods

June 17, 1989|From Reuters

TREVISO, Italy — This country has lost almost all of its silk crop this year because the silkworm larvae have been too busy eating to stop and spin their silk cocoons, the industry's breeders association said Friday.

It said that 99% of Italy's 60 million larvae have been afflicted by the mysterious outbreak of greed, gorging themselves on mulberry leaves. "It's something that has never happened (before) in the history of silkworm breeding," an association official said.
