Nation : Bush Threatens Child-Care Veto

June 21, 1989|From Times wire services

WASHINGTON — President Bush will veto major child-care legislation being advanced by Senate Democrats and a Republican if it reaches the White House in its present form, the Administration said today.

A letter from the Office of Management and Budget distributed on Capitol Hill said the multibillion-dollar package before the Senate "violates all of the President's principles."

The letter said the revised measure before the Senate is an improvement over the original bill but remains "fundamentally flawed." It said the measure would restrict parental choice in child care, provide assistance only to families who pay for child care and discriminate against low-income parents who have other family members care for their children.
