ENTERTAINMENT : Soviet Ballerina Wins With America

June 22, 1989| From Times wire services

MOSCOW — A Soviet ballerina won a gold medal today when she danced with an American in one of the world's top ballet competitions.

Galina Stepanenko was paired with Michael Shannon of Los Angeles in the International Ballet Competition held in Moscow's Bolshoi Theater. Contestants were judged individually, and only Stepanenko won a medal.

For Soviet and American dancers to compete on the same team "is really revolutionary in dance and especially in competitions," said Amanda Olmstead, the contest's spokeswoman.
