Hicks Wins Third Scratch Main Speedway Race

Gary Hicks of Glen Avon won the four-lap scratch main event in front of 2,922 Friday in the weekly speedway program at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Billy Hamill of Monrovia was second, Phil Collins of England third and Scott Brant of Riverside fourth. It was the third scratch main victory this season for Hicks, who took control at the gate.

Walt Farnum of Ventura won the eight-lap handicap main. Farnum and Hamill crashed during the fifth lap of the race, causing a restart. Farnum won the second race going away. Bryant was second, Hamill third and Hicks was fourth.
