A former research technician has been confirmed as suffering from a rare herpes virus believed responsible for the death of a co-worker last week, authorities said. A man who was formerly employed by International Research Development Corp. in Mattawan, Mich., was admitted Wednesday to Bronson Methodist Hospital for observation after the death of a research technician who had been bitten by a laboratory monkey. His condition has worsened from fair to serious. A hospital spokeswoman said he has contracted the Herpes B virus often carried by Old World macaque and rhesus monkeys such as those used at IRDC.
