June 28, 1989|From Associated Press

BRUSSELS — A Belgian air force colonel accused of giving top secret Belgian and NATO documents to the Soviet Union was convicted of treason Tuesday by a military court and sentenced to 20 years at hard labor.

Col. Guy Binet could have received life imprisonment, but the prosecutor had only asked for a 15-year sentence.

Binet, 54, had given the Soviets North Atlantic Treaty Organization documents for which he received $105,000, according to testimony at the trial.
