Teamsters President William J. McCarthy, 70, is recuperating at his Boston home after having open-heart surgery and is expected to resume his duties next month, according to several union sources. McCarthy had not been seen in Teamsters headquarters for about two weeks. Earlier this week, Joe Morgan, Teamsters vice president, told union leaders at a meeting in Orlando, Fla., that McCarthy had sent him a letter saying that he would be unable to attend the meeting because he was recovering from surgery. The union has made no official announcement about McCarthy's condition, but several sources said that the surgery was a single bypass.
