An Invitation to Superfund Group

July 06, 1989

Thanks to Mike Ward for his excellent article on the San Gabriel Valley Superfund project (Times, June 25), including the effort by the League of Women Voters to fill the public participation void with a grant from the league's Education Fund that is minuscule by comparison with EPA's expenditures for community relations.

With regard to the $50,000 technical assistance grants EPA offers to community groups, it is important to note that they are not easy to obtain. The group must incorporate for the specific purpose of the Superfund project and must raise other funds, in addition to the costs of incorporation. There are other restrictions, as well.

The Superfund Working/Information Group has adopted as its purpose "the protection and enhancement of water in the San Gabriel Valley." Among its goals are to monitor ground water cleanup, educate members and the public, maintain a pro-active library and promote water conservation. Any person who shares these interests is welcome to attend the next SWIG meeting on July 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the El Monte Community Center.
