Cerritos : Dog License Fees Go Up as New Contract Takes Effect

July 06, 1989

It costs more to license dogs in Cerritos now that the city has contracted with Long Beach for animal control services, although pet owners do not have to obtain new licenses until the current ones expire.

The cost of an annual license has gone from $10 to $20 for dogs not neutered or spayed. For those that are neutered or spayed, the license fee was raised from $7.50 to $10. Senior citizens pay half the regular license fee.

Until recently, when the City Council approved the Long Beach contract, animal control services were provided by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. But the society began notifying area communities earlier in the year that it was closing its shelter and would no longer be in the business of animal control.

The one-year contract with Long Beach, which took effect July 1, costs Cerritos $107,000 a year.
