Fans Are Not to Blame for Their Questionable All-Star Game Picks

July 08, 1989

Few things are more amusing than the media's annual wailing about baseball fans' "ignorance" as illustrated by the All-Star voting.

Where does Ross Newhan think the fans get their ideas?

As in all facets of entertainment, star status has everything to do with media hype and precious little to do with who has the most talent. Besides, if the All-Star game and all of baseball are ostensibly for the fans, what's wrong with giving the people what they want?

If I had a ticket for Tuesday's game, I'd much rather tell my grandchildren about seeing an NL infield including Hall of Famers such as Ozzie Smith and Mike Schmidt than one with Barry Larkin and some guy named after a coffee shop.
