VIDEO CHARTS : 'Mississippi Burning' Catches Fire

MORNING REPORT

August 17, 1989|DENNIS HUNT | Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

With "Twins" and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" past their peaks, "Dangerous Liaisons" (No. 3) has an outside chance of sneaking past them into the No. 1 position on the Billboard video rental chart. "Mississippi Burning" is burning up the chart, climbing to No. 6 in just two weeks. Though generally regarded as inferior to the original, "The Fly II," which grossed a noteworthy $19.6 million, could be the biggest rental in the horror genre since "Child's Play."

* Mel Gibson fans appear to be eager for anything starring their hero. "Tequila Sunrise," with Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell, grossed nearly $40 million in theaters and debuted at No. 11 on the video rental chart. Look for this 1930s-style romantic drama to end up somewhere in the Top Five.
