Life Without KFAC: When Rock Rolls Over Bach

September 10, 1989

Although lacking the experienced voices and signal strength of KFAC, KUSC appeared at first to be a good and honest classical music alternative. However, practically overnight, that changed, and I can no longer bear to listen to KUSC.

The management (1) hired the most pseudo-sophisticated-sounding people possible, (2) had them drag listeners through a slow, "pretend you aren't reading it" charade and (3) bloated our subscription air time with elongated station IDs and long, gagging monologues.

I used to give $100 annually to KUSC. Now I would give at least that to get KUSC off the air. Its pretentiousness is not only an embarrassment to me, but I am afraid it will turn away many who might otherwise grow to love classical music.
