Edmond de Szigethy; Married to Gabor Trio's Mother, Jolie

October 03, 1989

Edmond de Szigethy, described by his stepdaughter Zsa Zsa Gabor as a one-time Hungarian Freedom Fighter who married her mother Jolie Gabor in what proved to be "one of the great love affairs of all time," died over the weekend.

Zsa Zsa Gabor, awaiting sentencing on charges of slapping a Beverly Hills police officer, driving without a valid driver's license and possessing an open flask in her Rolls-Royce, said Monday that De Szigethy had a heart attack and died Saturday in Palm Springs.

He was "76 or 75," she said, and had broken a hip in a car accident a few weeks ago. He was believed to have been recovering from the hip injury and a heart attack that followed the accident when he had a second seizure.

When De Szigethy married Jolie Gabor, now 91, in March, 1957, in New York, he was described as a Hungarian count who had resisted the Communist takeover of Hungary in 1954. He was Jolie Gabor's third husband, and they had known each other in Budapest years earlier and renewed their friendship after meeting again in this country.

He operated his wife's jewelry salon in New York.

Jolie Gabor's other daughters are Magda and Eva.
