With 5:52 to play in the third quarter of a scoreless tie, Newbury Park quarterback Jai Johnston handed off to junior tailback Walter Thomas, who swept right, then handed off to Brian Smith on a reverse. Smith lateraled back to Johnston, who launched a 54-yard bomb to a wide-open Shane Gallimore for the game's only touchdown.
