Gospel choirs from West Covina and Pasadena placed first and second in Saturday's Fifth Annual Gospel Fest held at the Shrine Auditorium.
The 35-member New Providence Baptist Church Choir of West Covina out-performed seven other amateur gospel choirs. The eight finalists were chosen from about 40 groups that entered the competitions in five Southern California counties.
As part of the prize for finishing first, the choir directed by Renard Howard will appear on the "Bobby Jones Gospel Hour" on the Black Entertainment Television Network.
The Praise Gospel Singers, a 17-member women's choir directed by Melida Skeete-Smith, placed second.
The competition, sponsored by McDonald's restaurants, raised $20,000 for the United Negro College Fund.
