Tyson-Ruddock Fight Postponed Until Next Year

October 26, 1989

The Nov. 18 world heavyweight championship fight in Edmonton, Canada, between champion Mike Tyson and Donovan (Razor) Ruddock has been postponed until at least early next year because Tyson has been suffering from chest pains.

The bout would be rescheduled at the earliest possible opportunity. Promoter Garry Stevenson said it would probably be held in January, but that depended on Tyson's recovery.

Dr. Gerhard Sollbach, medical examiner for the Edmonton Boxing and Wrestling Commission, said the condition--probably caused by a virus--attacks the muscles and nerves in the rib cage and makes any form of exercise painful. He said he had seen the condition, known as costo chondritis, quite often many years ago, but it is relatively rare now.
