Sly Stone Arrested on 1987 Drug Charge

November 14, 1989

Sylvester Stewart, better known as musician Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone, was ordered held without bond Monday in Connecticut pending extradition to California, where he is wanted on a 1987 drug-possession charge, authorities said.

Stone was arrested by FBI agents from New Haven, Conn. and Newark, N.J., Saturday evening in Wilton, Conn., on a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, said Special Agent Virginia Wright of the FBI's New Haven office.

U.S. District Judge Warren W. Eginton on Monday ordered him held without bond for three days, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Ted Heinrich. Within that time, Heinrich said he expects California authorities to initiate extradition proceedings.

In April, 1987, the 45-year-old musician was arrested on state narcotics charges in Los Angeles. In July, 1988, after he failed to appear in court, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest, Wright said.

Since he fled California, Wright said, Stone has been living in Connecticut and New Jersey and has used the alias Sylvester Allen.
