Proposals for a 558-unit housing project on the former Conrock gravel pit have been approved by the City Council.
Under the plan, Orange Homes Inc. of San Clemente will build 73 single-family homes and 485 condominiums at the site, 454 N. Prospect St.
In addition, traffic signals will be installed at the Prospect Street intersections with Spring Street, Bond and Walnut avenues. Raised median strips, improved lighting, no-parking zones, bike lanes and other barricades will be required by the city.
Orange Homes also plans to lower Santiago Creek along the project's west side to protect properties from flooding, which is expected to occur every 100 years.
An earlier plan for the site by Orange Homes and another developer called for more than 700 homes. The council rejected that idea.
"It's a better plan than we saw before," Councilwoman Joanne Coontz said after Tuesday's vote to approve the project.
