Roger Heman Jr; Sound Technician

November 18, 1989

Roger Heman Jr., a sound technician who won a special-effects Academy Award in 1975 for his work on "Jaws" 32 years after his father Roger Sr. earned the same honor for "Crash Dive," has died on Sanibel Island, Fla.

His wife, Patricia, said he was 57 when he died of lung cancer on the small island off the coast of Ft. Myers on Monday. The family had moved there from Los Angeles two years ago.

Heman entered the technical end of the film business at the urging of his father.

In addition to his Oscar for "Jaws," Heman was nominated for "Coal Miner's Daughter" in 1980 and nominated for an Emmy for the TV movie "My Sweet Charlie" in 1969-70.

Besides his wife, he is survived by seven children and 10 grandchildren.
