Drug Dangers

December 03, 1989

The letters that approve (former Secretary of State) George Shultz's call for legalizing drugs (Nov. 26) overlook or ignore a deadly aspect of legalization--appetite for drugs is insatiable! To legalize cocaine, heroin, crystal, pot and other addictive drugs serves to create more horror.

If drugs are legalized there must be an attempt to control the amount of substance available to the addict. Sadly, there is never enough. Consequently, the black market flourishes. The problem grows commensurate with the additional addicts produced by the availability of cheap drugs; crimes against person and property increase; drug lords get richer.

Finally, big brother government, paid for by you and me, goes deeper into the hole financing the added horror.

Please, let's be realistic about solutions to this gigantic problem: 1. Don't use drugs--increase education about the problems; 2. Execute dealers!
