Holiday Treat for Doughnut, Apple Lovers

For a delightful Christmastime treat try Golden Delicious Oliebollen. This fanciful snack resembles lumpy doughnut holes and is made with Golden Delicious apples.

GOLDEN DELICIOUS OLIEBOLLEN

1 cup milk

2 tablespoons butter or margarine

Sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup warm water

1 package dry yeast

1 egg

3 cups flour

2 cups chopped Golden Delicious apples

3/4 cup dried currants

Oil for deep-frying

In saucepan heat milk, butter, 1 tablespoon sugar and salt until just warm. Place warm water in large bowl and sprinkle with yeast. Stir until dissolved. Add milk mixture, egg and 1 1/2 cups flour. Beat until smooth.

Stir in apples and currants. Add remaining flour and mix well. Cover and let rise in warm place 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in bulk. Drop by teaspoonfuls into deep oil heated to 375 degrees. Deep-fry about 5 minutes or until golden. Drain on paper towels. Roll in sugar while still warm. Makes about 2 1/2 dozen doughnuts.
