Afghanistan

February 19, 1990

I wonder why our ex-President does not recall the U.S. promise to stop aiding the Afghan insurgents in exchange for the Kremlin's promised (and completed) withdrawal of its troops that were supporting the Kabul government, its ally.

Whatever happened to our cry that the Russians never live up to their agreements, but we do? Now he is talking about supplying the rebel forces with anti-tank weapons, artillery and mine-field devices. Besides prolonging the killing (sounds a lot like Vietnam to me!), how could that aid in obtaining our goal of a political solution? If we step up our aid, the Kremlin will obviously be forced to do the same thing.

Knowing what has been happening recently in Eastern Europe it seems clear that staying out of it and allowing natural forces to operate will ultimately resolve the matter of who rules Afghanistan.
