Nordstrom 'Guilty' of Rewarding Initiative, but Others Also Require Work 'Off the Clock'

February 25, 1990

The revelations on Nordstrom employee relations pinpoint the potential abuses of commission plans and hours for salespersons across the country. But there are others far worse off. The pay and working conditions of automobile salespeople, for instance, rival the most primitive of 19th-Century Dickensian exploitation and neglect.

Unless reasonable guidelines are established for commissioned salespersons in their respective industries, the public inevitably will suffer in both service and employee attitude in the long run.
