KATMANDU, Nepal — A general strike called by Nepal's banned political parties to back their campaign for multi-party democracy virtually shut down Katmandu on Friday.
Political parties, outlawed 30 years ago as the country moved to a partyless system of elected councils, had appealed for a peaceful strike in the capital and towns across the Himalayan kingdom. Only a few violent incidents were reported.
