Man Bites Town

March 04, 1990

The cutesy article "Terminal Hype" (Man Bites Town, Jan. 14) by Harry Shearer is beneath the dignity of Los Angeles Times Magazine, just as the obscenity of walls plastered with advertising would be beneath the dignity of Los Angeles International Airport. The modernistic representation that greets visitors as they arrive and leave this great city is in good taste--a surprising statement from the valleys of glitz and glamour.

It is unfortunate enough that our coding for Los Angeles International Airport is LAX. Let us not take seriously the suggestion that we further burden our gateway to the world with glossy, garish advertising--enriching the coffers of already overrated and overpaid advertising agencies and marketing reps.

The problems of California are created by man, mostly in the name of greed, and often in the name of creative and artistic license. It is agreed that La La Heaven is vulgar and full of hustle--with Harry Shearer at the head of the list.
