Questionable Style of Soviet Chic

March 04, 1990

The fashion items described in your feature "Bloc Busters" (Feb. 23) have got to be in the worst possible taste to hit the fashion trend industry in a long time.

One particular outfit really takes the cake. This is the one featuring genuine Soviet prison uniforms accessorized with floral scarfs from the Ukraine. This is ironic, because it is the Ukrainians who suffered the greatest persecutions at the hands of Russians. The majority of the prisoners incarcerated in prison camps are Ukrainians.

While we're at it, why not recycle genuine concentration camp uniforms from Auschwitz or Dachau? Let's see if someone will go to China and purchase a batch of clothing worn by freshly executed students during last year's democratization attempt.
