100 Homeless Dine at Last Plummer Park Meal

March 06, 1990

More than 100 homeless people dined on a last meal of soup and sandwiches Monday as the nightly feeding program at West Hollywood's Plummer Park came to a close.

The city of West Hollywood ordered the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition to move its feeding program out of the park after numerous complaints by residents that the program was attracting crime and creating sanitation problems.

But the coalition vows to continue the feeding program, even though it has to move. The group has purchased a $12,000 van and announced plans to continue to distribute food at a site just outside the West Hollywood city limits.

Last month, a major food source of the coalition's dried up when Drexel Burnham Lambert closed its doors for good. Leftovers from the financial firms lunchtime meals to its employees made up the bulk of the coalition's supplies.
