"An Exercise in Common Sense" (Feb. 20) devotes much-needed attention to exercise and the average consumer. According to the article, exercise sessions consisting of two miles in 20 to 30 minutes three days per week is sufficient.
What is not made clear, however, is that the purpose of such a moderate exercise regime accomplishes a decrease in mortality only. If the goal of an exercise program is weight loss (more specifically fat loss), this regime is not sufficient. Fat loss is achieved with an exercise program of moderate pace for at least 30 to 45 minutes four to six days per week.
