Trustees Name Edwin Young L.A. City College President

March 29, 1990

A 30-year veteran of the Los Angeles Community College District on Wednesday was named president of Los Angeles City College after a nationwide search by the district Board of Trustees.

Edwin A. Young, 60, of Granada Hills was selected from a field of 71 applicants to serve as the 10th president of the 61-year-old Hollywood campus, the oldest of the district's nine campuses, with an enrollment of 16,500 students.

Young began his teaching career at Los Angeles City College, where he taught psychology and served as a counselor from 1959 to 1976.

He was appointed interim president last September, succeeding Stelle Feuers after she was named an assistant to District Chancellor Donald Phelps.

Young previously served as vice president for academic affairs at Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys from 1981 to 1989 and as dean of students at Pierce College in Woodland Hills from 1976 to 1981.

He holds degrees in curriculum and educational psychology from USC and UCLA. His wife Ruth is a psychologist with the Los Angeles Unified School District.
