Fashion : A SPECIAL REPORT: SPRING INTO FALL : Choice Cuts : Head Over Heels for Hair Bands

May 02, 1990|PATRICIA McCOLL

PARIS — When designers as different as Gianni Versace in Milan and Karl Lagerfeld, who designs both his own collection as well as Chanel in Paris, show fall fashions on models with hair smoothed off the forehead by a wide band, there's a new look in the making.

It's a look that was a signature of the 1960s, but according to Paris master hairdresser, Alexandre, who reinterpreted the look for Lagerfeld at Chanel: "It's a way with hair whose time has come again."

Chanel's way is to clear the forehead with a wide quilted leather band for day, with an equally wide band in satin or velvet for evening. On the fashion runway, those evening headbands were often decorated with Chanel's signature pearls or camellias.
