Man Pleads Guilty in Drive-By Shooting

May 03, 1990

An Atwater man charged with murder in Glendale's first fatal drive-by shooting pleaded guilty Friday to a reduced charge.

Jose Onofre Carrillo, 24, pleaded guilty in Pasadena Superior Court to voluntary manslaughter, in an agreement that he would be sentenced to eight years in prison, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Nancy M. Naftel. A murder conviction carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, she said.

Naftel said Carrillo shot Victor Martinez, 17, in April, 1989, near Chevy Chase Drive and San Fernando Road after Martinez and other alleged gang members attacked a young neighbor of Carrillo's with a crowbar. Carrillo is not believed to be a gang member, the prosecutor said.

Carrillo will be sentenced Aug. 10.
