Los Angeles City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky is in the Soviet Union this week to meet with government officials, Jewish leaders and representatives of the U.S. Embassy, his office said.

Yaroslavsky will be in Moscow until Sunday at the invitation of Dr. Mikhail Chlenov, president of Vaad, an association of 210 Jewish organizations.

The Westside councilman's office said the trip was prompted by concerns raised when Pamyat, a right-wing nationalistic Soviet organization, urged that organized acts of violence be committed Saturday against Jews in Moscow.

Yaroslavsky is accompanied by Si Frumkin, chairman of the Southern California Council for Soviet Jews, which is paying for Yaroslavsky's trip, Yaroslavsky spokeswoman Katharine Macdonald said.

Before his election to the City Council in 1975, Yaroslavsky served as executive director of the group, Macdonald said.
