A Lesson in Language

May 06, 1990

I would like to add to James Yenckel's article, "Here's a Trip That Won't Leave You Speechless" (April 22), by sharing my experience at a language school in Tuscany. My class was composed of a dozen Europeans who spoke at least two languages fluently. I and another American spoke only English. The polyglot majority set the classroom pace and I exchanged afternoons of touring for studying the approaching lessons. After four concentrated hours of morning class, I was allayed by villagers wanting to improve their English. My fellow American, missing a few classes, realized she would never catch up and dropped out. I left before the term concluded to travel and enjoy the country.
