Rosemead : Limits on Video Games

May 10, 1990

To discourage children from spending time in liquor stores, the City Council adopted an ordinance prohibiting video game machines in the stores.

The measure, passed on a 4-0 vote Tuesday with Councilman Robert DeCocker absent, will take effect Jan. 1.

"Liquor stores are not where we want our kids to be hanging out," Councilman Robert Bruesch said.

There are 10 liquor stores in the city, five of which have video games. Store owners said the ordinance won't much affect their business.

"Five years ago, (video games) helped pay the rent, but now it doesn't even make $100 a month," said Tony Reynoso, owner of Tony's Liquor on Valley Boulevard. "It might affect the business indirectly because now kids might not come in to buy sodas and candy.
