CHARLESTON, W. Va. — An elderly couple died Friday when their small plane crashed a mile short of a runway in what was to be their next-to-last stop on a 48-state tour of state capitals, airport officials said.

Marjorie Van Vliet, 67, of Warwick, R. I., and Frank Martineau, 69, of Bethesda, Md., had taken off from Providence, R. I., on May 29, announcing their intention of visiting every state capital with the exception of Alaska's and Hawaii's.
